500 Days of Summer

Release Date: Jul 17, 2009

Director: Marc Webb

Amongst the summer blockbusters this year is a delightful romantic comedy that is everything that others try to be but don't quite achieve. The story begins with "boy meets girl" and quickly spirals through the phases of the relationship, out of order but in perfect manner. Joseph Gordon- Levitt and Zooey Deschanel have instant chemistry in that quirky, innocent kind of way. He, as the helpless-romantic copywriter, and she, as the commitment-phobic assistant. Together, they act effortlessly that is less than often seen in major Hollywood films. The use of illustrations and split-screens help tell a story that is both sweet and funny, even when it's not. In the end, not everything may be perfect but you still leave with the feeling that "hey, maybe there is still hope in this world." Easily one of the best films of the summer, if not year.

Rating: 4½ stars
