G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Release Date: Aug 07, 2009
Runtime: 1 hr. 58 min.
Director: Stephen Sommers
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Regarded as one of the most anticipated popcorn flicks of this summer, "G.I. Joe" makes its live action debut with loud noises and cool weaponry. Unlike "Transformers 2," the movie gives sheer entertainment without all the nonsense and ramblings. Despite somewhat cheesy dialogue and a far-fetched storyline, keep in mind that this is a film built primarily around action figures. This being said, many of the scenes often appear cartoonish and kitschy. Still, it is well worth it to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow combat one-on-one, good vs. evil. I was greatly surprised by the fluency Lee Byung Hun was able to deliver through his character, both physically and verbally. On the other hand, Ray Park never fails in showing his mastery of the arts in spite of playing mute. The only disappointment in casting was Channing Tatum who looked the part but acted as blandly as he sounded. In terms of editing, the story suffered from having holes that director Sommers unsuccessfully tried to fill with sporadic flashback scenes in which character back-stories were meant to be told. It could have helped to go the route of another fellow summer film, "Star Trek," which got the intros out of the way in the beginning rather than later. Either way, "Joe" does its job and gives the audience what they want. Pure fun and tight leather suits. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
