Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Release Date: Jul 11, 2008
Runtime: 2 hr. 0 min.
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Luke Goss, John Alexander.

With the increase in comic book movies over the years, "Hellboy 2" does a decent job of standing out thanks to the visionary mind of Guillermo Del Toro. Paranormal creatures come alive through special effects and creativity, similar to that of "Pan's Labyrinth." Despite the graphically interesting film, there are a few downfalls. While the storyline is intriguing, at times, the film feels disjointed with unnecessary sequences and dialogue. The acting is very bland from both Selma Blair and Luke Goss, though Goss does manage to perform efficiently in physical form. Ron Perlman, on the other hand, does a great job of being the sarcastic anti-hero that tries relentlessly to be accepted. In the end, "Hellboy 2" proves to have more likable elements than this summer's disappointment, "Hancock."

Rating: 2½ stars
