Star Trek

Release Date: May 07, 2009
Runtime: 2 hr. 6 min.
Director: J.J. Abrams
Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood.

Believe the hype. And ignore the minority that bash this film for the sake of going against the grain. JJ Abrams proves himself again as a capable director, reviving a franchise that never quite reached a broader audience than its loyal fans. A rarity in itself, this film is entertaining to both devotees and newbies. The casting is seamless, especially Zachary Quinto who has mastered the role of showing no emotion (a la Sylar). Even Karl Urban as McCoy is refreshing, seeing as he has played a lot of butch roles in the past. Aside from the stunning visuals and action scenes, character development is essential to making this film successful. The only negative I found was the awkward transition from youth to adulthood. Nevertheless, it was thrilling to see a classic brought to the big screen in a different way. The humor and constant chides helped keep the mood light in spite of all the drama occurring. I'm already ecstatic about the sequel which most likely won't be out for at least 2-3 yrs.

Rating: 4½ stars
